今日は実在するあるオーストラリア人のサーファーに関する話で、タイトルは、Australian Surfer Defies All Odds After Long Recovery. 「回復に長い時間がかかった後、オーストラリア人のサーファーは、あらゆる困難に立ち向かう。」というもので講師はフィリピンの女性。
Ex.2のArticle ニュース記事では、ハワイ州のオアフ島で毎年12月に世界サーフリーグのチャンピョンシップが行われ、34人のサーファーが世界から集まるが、ここは、バンザイパイプラインと呼ばれる最も恐るべき波の一つとして知られている。（Banzai Pipeline is one of Hawaii’s most formidable waves. 34 surfers competing in the World Surf League Championship Tour, the most coveted prize in professional surfing, gather on Oahu’s North Shore in December every year.) 2015年の大会のウｵ―ムアップセクションで、オーウｴン・ライトは危険が潜むコンディションの中漕ぎ出した。彼は、波によって岸に流される前に、連続した波によって水中に沈んだ。海岸線で彼に合った人は、彼が方向感覚を失ったようで、話せない様に見えたと報告した。（During a warm-up session at Pipe Masters 2015, Owen Wright paddled out into treacherous conditions. He was held underwater by consecutive waves before he let the surf wash him ashore. Those who met him at shoreline reported that he looked disorientated and seemed unable to speak.） 数時間横になっていたが、ライトの状態は良くならなかったため、急いで彼は病院に運ばれた。その後すぐに彼が脳に深刻な障害を被っていることが確認された。（After lying down for a few hours, Wright’s condition did not improve and he was rushed to hospital. It was confirmed shortly thereafter that he had suffered a severe brain injury.)
負傷の程度はしばらく公にされなかったが、数か月後に彼は記憶と機能を失っていることが知られるようになった。（The extent of the injury wasn’t made public for some time, but over the next few months it became known that he was suffering from memory and function loss.）

彼は長くつらいリハビリの後この競技に復帰し、２０１７年の２月には、オーストラリアのクイーンズランドでチャンピオンシップツアーの開幕イベントで勝利した。彼は目に涙を浮かべた友人や競争相手の群衆の中で兄弟によってビーチの椅子に座らされた。彼は今サーフリーグチャンピオンシップで３位につけている。（In February 2017, Wright won the opening event of the Championship Tour in Queensland, Australia. He was chaired onto the beach by his siblings amidst a crowed of teary-eyed friends and competitors. He is currently sitting in the third in the World Surf League Championship rankings.）
Ex.4のDiscussionではまず、What do you think about Owen Wright’s story? という問いがあり、私は、“I think that his comeback is very moving.” と答えると講師は「Why do you think so?」と聞いてきたので私は、”Ah～、It is very difficult for him to come back because he lost his brain’s memory and function. So I think it was very difficult and it’s very moving.” と答えると講師は、｢I totally agree. It was very challenging for him. If I were him, I could have just stopped surfing. But he didn’t. He really wanted title.｣と言った。
また､In what ways do you think Wright’s story will inspire others? という問いに対して私は。”By overcoming loss of memory and function.” と答えたが講師は「It’s like what happened to him but in general what happened to him like how will it inspire others really aside from the injuries it cost him. What do you think this story inspire others?」と聞いてきたので私は、”Because….. , his strongness, ….. or will to come back, and will to rehabilitate.” と言うと講師は、「Definitely！! He has the strong will to continue. And everyone so inspire of that. Ok！So let’s not stop dreaming just because we had an injury. (だから怪我をしたからといって夢を見るのをやめないようにしましょう。)と言った。
次に Why do you think Wright wanted to return to professional surfing after he had recovered from injury? という問いに対して私は、”Because he wants to try surfing again and he wants to win.” と言うと講師は、「Yeah！ I think it is the biggest reason. He wants to win. He wants to get the world title. So that’s really inspiring.」と言った。
Ex.5のFurther Discussion 一歩踏み込んだディスカッションでは、What emotions do you imagine athletes feel when they sustain potentially career-ending injuries? について私は、”I imagine emotions of hopelessness.” と答えると講師は、「Ok, what do you think they will feel of that hopelessness.?」と聞いてきたので、私は、”Because they can not play it again.”と答えたが講師は、「Cause they might not be able to play again because of injury. But you know Wright has very strong perseverance.」(負傷した人は怪我のために再度プレイできなくなるかもしれないが、ライトは大変強い忍耐力を持っていた。)と言い、私は、”Yes. He is a very strong person.”と言った。
次に、Do you think it would be frightening for an athlete to return to competition after suffering a severe injury? Why? Why not? という問いには、”Yes, I do. Because it may end his playing career. I admire their strength of spirit to overcome.” と答えると講師は、「Yeah！Like that. The strong spirits! OK. Even if you have strong body, if you don’t have strong spirits, I don’t think you can conquer everything just Wright did.」と言った。 さらに講師は、｢What about you? Hide. If you were Wright and suffering injury, would you have continued or return the competition?｣ と聞いてきたので私は、”Ah～、I think it’s difficult for me to return. I may retire.” と答えると講師は笑いながら、「Retire right away.」と言った。
Ex.6 Quotes 引用文では、It’s just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up. (ただの仕事さ。草木が育ち、鳥が飛び、波が砂浜に打ち寄せるように、私は人を叩きのめす。)というモハメッド・アリの科白に対して、Would you say that being a professional athlete is more than a job? Why? Why not? という問いかけがあり、私は、“Yes,Ｉ would. Because it’s a world where competition is much tougher than work.” と答えると講師は、「Yes！ Definitely.」と言った。
今日は、重い肉体的な負傷から立ち直ったサーファーの記事で、私は軽い脳梗塞と左足の骨折と二度に渡って会社を長期休暇してから職場に復帰したが、プロスポーツの世界ではその復帰の難しさや厳しさは、肉体を酷使する世界なので段違いだろう。 今日のテーマ、記事で講師と共有、共感できたのは、やはりライト選手の復帰にかける意思の強さ strong willで会話を通してそのことを強く実感できたのは、やはり会話力が上がって、文章の意味をより深く感じられるようになってきているからだろうと思う。 今後も講師との会話を通して記事の内容をより深く、確かに知ることができる様にしていきたいと思う。
